Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 universal goals adopted in 2015 by all United Nations Member States as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. They provide a global roadmap for improving people’s well-being, protecting the environment, and promoting fairer and more sustainable economic and social development by 2030.
The SDGs establish an international framework for action to guide the public policies and strategies of governments, international organisations, businesses and civil society towards a model of sustainable development. The 17 goals are underpinned by 169 specific targets and a system of indicators that enables countries’ progress to be measured and compared.
Unlike the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), agreed by the United Nations in 2000 and primarily focused on tackling poverty in developing countries, the SDGs have a universal approach, are built around the three pillars of sustainable development (People–Planet–Prosperity), and require the commitment of all countries, regardless of their level of development. The 2030 Agenda places equity and reducing inequalities at its core through the principle of “leaving no one behind”.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals
- Goal 1. No Poverty: end poverty in all its forms and ensure social protection.
- Goal 2. Zero Hunger: end hunger and promote sustainable agriculture and adequate nutrition.
- Goal 3. Good Health and Well-being: ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for everyone.
- Goal 4. Quality Education: ensure inclusive, equitable and quality education throughout life.
- Goal 5. Gender Equality: achieve equality between women and men and eliminate all forms of discrimination and violence.
- Goal 6. Clean Water and Sanitation: ensure universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation.
- Goal 7. Affordable and Clean Energy: expand access to modern, reliable and sustainable energy.
- Goal 8. Decent Work and Economic Growth: promote decent employment, productivity and inclusive economic growth.
- Goal 9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: develop resilient infrastructure and foster sustainable innovation.
- Goal 10. Reduced Inequalities: reduce inequalities within and between countries.
- Goal 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities: create more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities.
- Goal 12. Responsible Consumption and Production: encourage the efficient use of resources and reduce the environmental impact of consumption.
- Goal 13. Climate Action: take urgent action to tackle climate change and its impacts.
- Goal 14. Life Below Water: conserve and sustainably use the oceans and marine resources.
- Goal 15. Life on Land: protect forests, biodiversity and terrestrial ecosystems.
- Goal 16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions: promote peaceful societies, ensure access to justice, and build effective and transparent institutions.
- Goal 17. Partnerships for the Goals: strengthen international cooperation and the partnerships needed to advance the 2030 Agenda and achieve the SDGs.
Why are the SDGs important?
The SDGs provide a shared language and common goals for addressing the world’s major challenges, from poverty, disease and conflict to biodiversity loss and climate change. They place health at the heart of sustainable development, recognising that human health also depends on social, economic and environmental factors—known as the social determinants of health—and promote integrated solutions that benefit both people and the planet, in line with the One Health concept promoted by the World Health Organization.
